Tom Chapin, James Aubrey, Hugh Edwards.
In the hands of the renowned experimental theater director Peter Brook, William Golding's legendary novel on the primitivism lurking beneath civilization becomes a film as raw and ragged as the lost boys at its center. Taking an innovative documentary-like approach, Brook shot Lord of The Flies with an off-the-cuff naturalism, seeming to record a spontaneous eruption of its characters' IDs. The result is a rattling masterpiece, as provocative as its source material.

The Lord of the Flies, 1963

The standard Lord of the Flies. (I’m assuming everyone has read it and knows the plot. If not, go do that now.) It’s been at least 25 years since I’ve read it, so I can’t really say how true to the book it is (although I do remember that I pictured some parts differently), but I’ll assume it’s pretty close.
The production quality is fairly poor, as you might expect from an old movie filmed outside, but other than that, it’s as good a job as I expect you could do for a movie version.
I will say that the chant of the choir – a version of the Kyrie – was something that I don’t remember from the book, but was really quite striking and added to the sense of horror in the movie; a rare case in which a movie can outperform a book.
So I guess my final verdict is that that book is better, but this isn’t too bad.
