COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Excellent Movie submitted by Sara W on July 7, 2011, 12:30pm This is a great movie. Like every Altman movie, there's 10 million characters, but each one is perfect for their role and does an incredible job. The standouts for me are Helen Mirren, Bob Balaban and Kelly McDonald. And probably Maggie Smith, what a fabulous snob. Oh, and Stephen Fry. He's a great bumbling detective, falling over with his own oblivious self-importance. He never fails to put his foot in it. He's the best!

This is a classic locked room-style British mystery in which a collection of people, each with their own secrets and grudges and issues with the head of the household gather at a secluded country manor house. When the head of the household is murdered, there's a lot of motives among the guests and the servants.

The story unfolds beautifully, the pacing is perfect. Even with a huge cast, Altman leaves just enough time to establish and draw out each character, even the minor ones, like the scullery maid and her secret affairs. Besides the excellent characterization, the complex plot is well-written, perfectly executed and completely and totally worth it. This movie is an experience every time you watch it.

Worth watching a second time. submitted by jilmac5 on July 11, 2011, 11:08pm I really enjoyed this movie even more the second time I watched. A great movie that shows all the goings on behind the scenes during a weekend hunting party in the English countryside.

A Little Confusing submitted by Cami K on August 13, 2011, 9:57pm Good movie but so many characters it was a little hard to follow. A second viewing may be needed to keep all the characters straight. A good mystery and worth watching.

If you like "Downton Abbey" submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 21, 2012, 11:27am Those who liked "Downton Abbey" will also enjoy this murder mystery set in the early 20th century in a British manor house. The mystery reveals much about the British class system and its hypocracy.

Slooooooooow submitted by gardenfaerie on August 5, 2017, 4:15pm I've watched this twice now and just find it painfully slow-moving, despite the excellent ensemble cast (Stephen Fry, Derek Jacobi, Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith and Laurence Fox (swoon) to name a few). The murder was actually welcome! I'm not an action movie fan and like quiet programs, but... I just couldn't get into this one, despite all the other good reviews. I loved Downton, Berkley Square, etc., by the way.

Complex Murder Mystery submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2017, 3:08pm This film offers a complex murder mystery with an all-star cast performing at their best and it richly rewards several viewings. The plot and large number of characters can seem unwieldy at first, but the stories that unfold are worth the initial confusion as the pieces gradually fall into place. This is Robert Altman at his best.

Nothing happens submitted by SurfGrape on August 13, 2018, 3:46pm This movie was both frenetically-paced and slow-moving. All the characters talked at once and there was always a lot of movement on the screen, but nothing happened. Like all Robert Altman movies, many scenes are just ad-libbed by the characters, and he's a lot more interested in time and place than any kind of plot.

Flabby and boring almost to its very end submitted by Tassos on April 20, 2021, 8:47am Which I am about to see, but had to stop the damn boring slow movie for a day.

And of course NO, I really can't stand that pretentious, vacuus soap opera "Downton ABbey" and nobody with a pulse can either.

You will not be satisfied with this lame movie. GO elsewhere.

Great fun submitted by brooksza on August 15, 2022, 11:09am Ooh, liked this a lot. Layered with intrigue, characters and dry humor. Some great running bits through this. The movie runs though so many characters and plot motivations, I could watch it again to pick up more. But I can probably say that about every Robert Altman movie I've seen.

Amazing cast submitted by RebeccaWittekindt on July 31, 2023, 8:34pm An incredible cast really anchors this movie. The writing is amazing, with a great story, and Altman’s practice of miking people individually really makes conversations feel private and separated. It kind of feels like a murder mystery version of Downton Abbey.
