COMMUNITY REVIEWS

good submitted by Sierra B on July 26, 2016, 9:51pm very good historical drama.

excellent submitted by carolinepbg on July 2, 2017, 7:35pm Watch this movie .

Race submitted by Marykw21 on August 10, 2017, 6:55pm Race made me want to run. It also made me want to punch Hitler in the face (along with many other Nazis portrayed in the movie) but that's neither here nor there. What is important is that this movie is able to tell a lesser known story and bring it to a wide audience. It showed that racism was big not only in German just prior to WWII but also here in America. I would highly suggest watching this to help you learn more about Jesse Owens and how little of an impact him winning a number of gold medals had on the civil rights movement. It breaks my heart just thinking about it.

Powerful submitted by ferielp on August 23, 2017, 9:47am I sobbed several times in the movie not because they showed any new information, but because it felt like we'd come so far only to have history repeat itself with the recent increase in white supremacist visibility. Countless figures like Jesse Owens, Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller had to fight tooth and nail to be viewed as human and have their achievements acknowledged. We cannot allow ourselves to regress.

Compelling submitted by Xris on July 28, 2020, 2:07am The best part of this movie is the relationship between Jesse and his coach, who paid his own way to the Olympics to be able to be there for him. The brief part with Luz Long was also an insightful part. I didn't realize that two Jewish athletes were asked not to participate, and they agreed to let Jesse run to beat the Nazis. I also didn't realize that Jesse broke some records right here in Ann Arbor! Great movie!

History submitted by mandevil on April 7, 2021, 11:02pm Jesse Owens was an amazing athlete and human being. I’m sure watching him race was thrilling.

Pretty Good Movie submitted by KidBlue on November 17, 2022, 1:30pm Race is a good movie, but having just read a biography of Jesse Owens (Triumph, which this library has, and it's pretty good), there are a few liberties taken, some things in the movie that never happened, and there are a few of details and things not gone into very deeply or very well. Perhaps this is nit-picking. Atill, Jesse Owens story is worth a deeper story.
Having said all that, the last 30 minutes is excellent and gripping and infuriating in its depiction of the racism of both Nazis and of Americans.
