Sequel to: Death of a liar.
James Harrison has recently moved to a restored hunting lodge in Sutherland with his gorgeous private nurse Gloria Dainty. When Hamish visits Mr. Harrison to welcome him to the neighborhood, the old man treats him very rudely. Gloria apologizes for her employer's behavior, and Hamish takes the plunge and invites her out for dinner. On the appointed evening, Hamish waits for Gloria at the restaurant. And waits. Gloria never shows up. Four days later, Gloria's body washes up on the beach near Braikie. Now Hamish must find out who killed the beautiful new resident of Sutherland, and why, before the murderer strikes again.

new constable on the scene submitted by camelsamba on August 19, 2019, 8:33pm I listen to this series as audiobook downloads, and for a while in the 20s I was noting down how quickly the phrase "sudden sibilance of his accent" appeared. Sometimes it was within the first 5 minutes. In this book, I noticed that she is now writing "his accent becoming stronger, as it did when he was distressed or worried." What a divergence! I feel like I should go back to a book or two and pinpoint exactly when the change occurred.

With Dick off to start a bakery with Anka, Hamish has a new young constable (Charlie). Hamish finds that he doesn't like sharing the station, so Charlie ends up moving in to a spare basement room at the hotel (thanks in part to Priscilla). And rather than Charlie trying to mess up Hamish's love life (as Dick did a few times around), Charlie is the one getting into sticky situations. As usual there are multiple murders (starting with the nurse of the title) and a few wrong conclusions and Strathbane station politics - but at least no "sudden sibilance" :^)
