Pleasantly surprised submitted by Enzy on November 7, 2011, 2:58pm I was not sure what to expect of this movie when I checked it out, but I was pleasantly surprised. The setting of the is post war where there tends to be a melancholy beauty juxtaposed with an enjoyment of life that lends itself to film. Kristin Scott Thomas does a marvelous job portraying a proper British mother who is very protective of her son and the family's social status. As the movie progresses, her character deepens when we discover that she is desperately trying to save the family estate which is slowly losing money and spiraling into bankruptcy. Her husband (Colin Firth) who, since the war, has had difficulty adjusting to the life that his wife wants and values. For a movie that addresses some difficult issues, for the most part it remained lighthearted and funny.

As a side note, this may seem really trivial, but I absolutely loved the clothing. I do not normally notice clothes in a movie but I was surprised with how often I coveted what Jessica Biel's character was wearing. Whether she was wearing high waisted, tailored pants and a flowing blouse or an elegant evening gown, I think that I would have worn everything that Biel's character did.

Apart from the wardrobe being fantastic, this movie was just a nice comedy overall. There were laugh out loud moments and moments that required more of a subtle chuckle. I think that I will wait a couple of months, but I will definitely be checking this out again.

hahahah submitted by gogo on June 17, 2019, 8:17pm nice comedy!

An underrated film submitted by Cihendricks on July 23, 2021, 6:37pm The cast is delightful. The soundtrack is fun. The plot is delightful. But the script? Oh, Noel Coward...you are a sheer delight. You were a gift to the English language.

And Jessica Biel can pull off a period piece! Who knew?
