COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Bitter tea of General Yen: early interracial romance; Forbidden: lascivious librarian submitted by willow on April 12, 2016, 7:21pm "The Bitter Tea of General Yen" includes a relationship between Megan Davis (Barbara Stanwyck) and Chinese warlord General Yen (Nils Asther); the love scene occurs in a dream. The review in the New York Times noted "Mr. Asther's make-up is impressive, with slanting eyes and dark skin. He talks with a foreign accent." Yen's concubine is played by Toshia Mori, a Japanese immigrant.

The film was made prior to the Hays code, which banned depictions of miscegenation; the "indecency" of this film led to some public outrage.

Another film in this collection is "Forbidden," which features Barbara Stanwyck as a librarian having a relationship with a married man.
