In medieval Sweden a knight returns from war only to find a ravaged homeland. He meets up with a group of travelling players and eventually confronts the embodiment of death with whom he engages in a game of chess for his life. The knight and Death play as the cultural turmoil envelopes the people around them as they try, in different ways, to deal with the upheaval the plague has caused.

Bergman's Best
submitted by Caser on February 25, 2010, 9:32am
I'm not alone in hailing The Seventh Seal as Ingmar Bergman's best film, as it is the one that catapulted him to world fame. But what makes this film one of the true greats is the way it makes you feel that each line speaks to you personally, or perhaps, is you speaking personally.
The Knight's confession to the supposed priest (really the hidden Death) is one of many sets of philosophical dialogue that captures the universal condition of man in such an intimate way that you can't help but feel that this Antonius Block, this knight, this disillusioned rogue, is you in another time, you in a different set of conditions.
He says, "My life has been a futile pursuit, a wandering, a great deal of talk without meaning. I feel no bitterness or self-reproach because the lives of most people are very much like this. But I will use my reprieve for one meaningful deed." One chance for redemption before the plague takes another victim. One chance to render some kind of meaning out of futility. One chance to believe that life is more than one long death march.
