COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Old School Hollywood Greatness submitted by Meginator on July 1, 2011, 9:52pm Robert Preston simply defines Harold Hill, and the classic version of "The Music Man" is a great representative of the traditional, old school Hollywood musical. Though some of the sets may seem a bit transparently so to modern eyes, I find they add to the stage-ish appeal of the movie, which nonetheless aptly takes on a big screen sensibility. Ron Howard is delightfully self-conscious as a child actor, and the casting is good all around. Of course, I particularly enjoyed "Marian the Librarian," wishing I had a ladder like that either in my library or in my own home. "The Music Man" is a classic film representative of a great era in Hollywood cinema and in the history of grandiose musicals, and when it comes to Harold Hill, Robert Preston definitely knows the territory.

Golden age Hollywood musical submitted by FordAlpha on August 13, 2019, 10:06pm From "Rock Island" to "Minuet in G", this is the great old-style Hollywood movie musical at its greatest. The love story, like those of so many musicals, and operas, and rom-coms, doesn't bear much scrutiny (really? Marian should surrender her love to a brazen con man so that her goodness can redeem him?), but that hardly matters. The cast is stellar, the music stupendous.
