a classic, and might-ay good submitted by lisa on July 5, 2019, 10:55am The dialogue is SO insanely well done. SPOILER ALERT: don't read ahead if you don't want spoilers.

You know in your heart that in spite of anything I've done, I love you.

I don't care who loves who! I won't play the sap! I won't walk in Thursby's, and I don't know how many others' footsteps! You killed Miles and you're going over for it.

How can you do this to me, Sam? Surely, Mr. Archer wasn't as much to you as...

Listen.

This won't do any good. You'll never understand me, but I'll try once and then give it up.

When a man's partner is killed, he's supposed to do something. It makes no difference what you thought of him. He was your partner, and you're supposed to do something about it...

...and it happens we're in the detective business. Well, when one of your organization gets killed, it's...

...it's bad business to let the killer get away with it ... bad all around, bad for every detective everywhere.

You don't expect me to think that these are sufficient reasons for sending me...

Wait'l I'm through. Then, you can talk.

I've no earthly reason to think I can trust you. If I do this and get away with it, you'll have something on me that you can use whenever you want to. Since I've got something on you, I couldn't be sure that you wouldn't put a hole in me someday.

All those are on one side. Maybe some of them are unimportant. I won't argue about that. But look at the number of them.

What have we got on the other side?

All we've got is that maybe you love me and maybe I love you.

You know whether you love me or not.

Maybe I do. I'll have some rotten nights after I've sent you over, but that'll pass.

If all I've said doesn't mean anything to you, then forget it and we'll make it just this:

I won't, because all of me wants to, regardless of consequences.

And because you've counted on it. The same as you counted on it with all the others.

Considered by Many Film Historians as the First Noir Film submitted by sVfGI7Glt2pz7GZgVB90 on July 12, 2020, 4:54am This fast-moving movie full of twists and turns and intricacies defined the careers of actors Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, and Sydney Greenstreet, as well as the director John Huston. Bogart plays a private detective on a case that entails three eccentric criminals, an attractive impostor, and their pursuit for a precious statuette. The first and the best of the three film adaptations of Dashiell Hammett's acclaimed "hard-boiled" crime novel.

Excellent Adaptation submitted by kencza on August 20, 2021, 6:26am Do you watch the film and then read the book or vice versa? It does not really matter with this story. The performances are top notch, the plot is easy to get into and hard to forget. The film gets better with each viewing and is one of Bogie's top 3.

A great film submitted by SaraP on July 26, 2022, 1:09pm Be sure to read the book too. The movie is great, but the book can't be beat.

Iconic submitted by courtneyhooper on August 15, 2022, 9:53pm A wonderful movie and a wonderful book
