COMMUNITY REVIEWS

good submitted by manz on July 23, 2016, 8:36pm A really lovely film! It makes you ponder friendships and how they come in all shapes and sizes.

Okay submitted by VmT on August 1, 2016, 11:44pm Worth watching, but I didn't particularly care for it

Could only get 1/2 way thru submitted by mandevil on September 6, 2016, 10:29am Somehow the story never interested me.

I wanted to like it... submitted by bookher on July 13, 2017, 9:14am I wanted to like this movie so much because I think Cate Blanchett is amazing but the story line never really got that interesting. They could have done so much more with these great actors.

Wonderful Film submitted by Meginator on August 24, 2017, 10:34am Carol is a beautifully made film, a slowly simmering deep dive into an unexpected relationship between two compelling characters. The film is not overly dramatic and is deliberately slow paced, but the resulting tone suits the story perfectly and makes it feel more honest. Carol is very deliberately constructed and relies on its lead actresses, who are both amazing in their roles, with the kind of chemistry that makes sense for their characters. The whole production is very well done and gradually swells to an all-encompassing emotional experience that sets it apart from other films that feature lesbian relationships. Carol is a can't-miss film and may well become a classic.

Slow and Artsy submitted by Maria Maguire on July 3, 2018, 11:25pm A lot of people liked this film. I wanted to like this film. But to me, it was very slow and overly artsy. I felt like I was waiting for something to happen the whole movie. I like more action in my movies, or at least more happenings. I was bored watching this movie.

That said, I have lots of friends who really did enjoy it! And it's a well made lesbian movie, which can be hard to come by. So if you tend to like artsy movies and don't mind slower paced films, you might enjoy it. If not, I'd recommend you Imagine Me & You or Saving Face instead.

ok submitted by kbahleda on July 23, 2018, 10:09am A bit slow but overall a good film

Carol submitted by lstorc on July 10, 2019, 10:06am The acting is fine, as is the plot. It is snail level pacing, which is a huge problem since it isn't interesting enough to support slow pacing.

I really wanted to like the movie submitted by Aimless on July 24, 2019, 2:30pm I really wanted to like the movie, sadly , it was quite slow

High style, as you might expect from the director. submitted by lisa on July 30, 2019, 2:20pm To me it doesn't capture their passion as much as the book. But that Highsmith was a firey, firey one.

Harge? Marge? submitted by redwood on February 15, 2021, 12:34pm The performances are lackluster and the chemistry between the leads is not at all convincing. And beyond that, Carol's husband is named "Harge," and has a sister named "Marge," which makes it impossible to take this movie seriously.

Seconding the reviewer who recommends Saving Face as a much better lesbian film (one focused entirely on people of color, as opposed to Carol, which has an all-white cast).

Carol submitted by stht on March 6, 2021, 7:58pm The predatory nature of the relationship, plus the slow pacing and lack of chemistry, made this a dull viewing experience overall.
