Frank Cross has made the meteoric rise from the depths of the mailroom to TV network president. He is mean, nasty, uncaring, unforgiving, and has a sadistic sense of humor which are perfect qualities for a modern-day Scrooge. Before the night is over, he'll be visited by a maniacal New York cab driver from the past, a present-day fairy who's into pratfalls, and finally, a ghoulish, seven-foot headless messenger from the future in this modern version of Charles Dickens 'A Christmas Carol.'
Blu-ray, widescreen, 2.0 surround, 5.1 surround; requires Blu-ray player.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Doesn't Live Up to Its Reputation submitted by Meginator on July 9, 2023, 8:17pm This film is a late 1980s retelling of “A Christmas Carol”, although its mean spirit makes Scrooge’s inevitable redemption ring a bit hollow and ultimately deprives the story of its emotional impact. Bill Murray is a little too convincing as a heartless television executive, always feeling much more like a caricature than a real person and robbing the script of its potential narrative power. The film does have a somewhat novel approach in its plotting, with the Scrooge character receiving the three ghosts’ wisdom while attempting to oversee a live production of (you guessed it) the Dickens classic, giving the film a self-referential quality and an additional story angle aside from the ghosts’ visits alone. Unfortunately, the humor is too heartless and the central character too cruel to be convincing, and the reliance on a very familiar storyline means that this is only worth seeking out if this particular style of over-the-top humor generally appeals to you.
