An Unlikely Success submitted by Meginator on June 27, 2020, 5:36pm With his reputation and generally gritty musical style, Johnny Cash may not seem like an obvious choice to make an all-time great holiday album, but his versions of classic songs are touching and seem to reveal a deep honesty. Something about Cash’s imperfect delivery makes songs like “Away in a Manger” and “Merry Christmas Mary” take on new meaning and, when coupled with spoken word stories, tug at the heartstrings more effectively than the smoothest crooners. This album was a pleasant surprise from start to finish.
