Just A Souvenir submitted by jibkidder on August 11, 2022, 9:47am I love the thought of Andre 3000 in London for the first time, searching all around for Squarepusher, an artist whose work he had fallen in love with, an influence that is all over, for better or worse, "A Love Below". TJ's initial works, especially in the time they were released, were just mind blowing and contrast to Aphex Twin, because Squarepusher had chops in the conventional sense. The consequence of chops in futuristic music is the same as the consequence of chops in the olden times - it can be easy to miss the point, you can get lost in the details. That was the main point proved by Punk - higher order issues like sensibility matter more than anything else. Following those earlier releases, Squarepusher fell into a slump, with works that lost site of what might be interesting. "Just A Souvenir" sort of recaptures the magic, he sounds focused here and brought new styles into the fold. A jazz Kraftwerk drum n bass take on the Ramones? I didn't see that coming!
