"The Romans have long since departed, and the Britian is steadily declining into ruin. But, at least, the wars that once ravaged the country have ceased. Axl and Beatrice, a couple of elderly Britons, decide that now is the time, finally, for them set off across this troubled land of mist and rain to find the son they have not seen for years, the son they can scarcely remember"--Dust jacket.

A slow journey
submitted by terpsichore17 on July 30, 2021, 12:30pm
Briton versus Saxon, man versus fell beast, a couple traveling together through all manner of harsh weather, obstacles natural and supernatural, and through the magical mists of forgetfulness: these should all have drawn me eagerly forward (in fairness: the monastery, the fight about its tower, and the poisonous goat did help speed the way).
But the majority of this book was rather sluggish. To an extent, I understand why – the confusion attending the collective loss of memory must be depicted somehow – but even leaving aside the characters who don’t quite recall where they’re going or why, the prose itself was leaden and left me unmoved.
