This notoriously bad adaptation is more cringe-worthy than ever, and has me wondering about the book, too. submitted by lisa on June 23, 2021, 12:21pm I gather that the source novel's heavy sarcastic broad brush of cynicism, painting everyone in a very bad light, might undercut the cringiness of the characters' attitudes. Having the Tom Hanks character be sympathetic on any level, as more-or-less protagonist, is (happily) problematic by current standards.

Also, trigger warning & alert: the "n" word is used multiple times in this film.
