COMMUNITY REVIEWS

A classic submitted by Zekicmom on August 18, 2017, 7:21am Warning, the songs will be stuck in your head long after seeing this movie. However, that's not actually a bad thing. I enjoyed rewatching this movie with my children. There were a lot of talking points, the antisemitism, the position of women in society, the matchmaker!

Love it! submitted by eagles on July 19, 2019, 3:34pm I watched this several times and I love it even more each time.

Thoughtful movie worth rewatching submitted by pamelawright on August 5, 2020, 7:51pm We watch this about once a year as a family. There are so many great points to discuss. The music is very catchy.

I hate musicals but love this one submitted by Will O on August 26, 2020, 9:41am 90% of why I like this movie is Topol as Tevye. He brings a warmth, depth and charisma to the role and it just looks like he's having a blast the whole time.
The pacing is good and at three hours it doesn't feel overly long.
The story of tradition vs progress is really well done and shows that even someone like Tevye who is more forward thinking than most in his generation still has his limits of what he will "allow".
The film does a great job of painting pretty much every speaking character as a complex person and even the bad guys aren't mustache twirling villains but are also given the same depth as the villagers.
One of very few musicals I actually like and a great celebration of a loving father, even if at times he loves tradition more than his daughters.
Also, Lazar Wolf is the coolest name ever.

Fiddler on the Roof submitted by leighsprauer on April 20, 2022, 9:37pm Oh, I can't believe I waited until I was 45 to watch this movie.
This is the story of Tevye, a peasant farmer in Russia, as his daughters come of marrying age and his Jewish family deals with increasing hostility from the czarist government. The story begins with Tevye singing about "tradition" - the force that holds their life and faith together. That tradition is threatened by the very non-traditional courtships and marriages of his oldest daughters, but is still binding even when their lives are upended. The beautiful metaphor of the fiddler on the roof - trying to scratch out a beautiful tune despite his precarious situation - is carried through the entire film, as Tevye balances his faith on what sometimes seems like the slippery slope of a world that is entering modernity. Graceful but firm, hopeful but steady - Tevye's faith is as balanced and agile as that fiddler. It's a beautiful movie.

Fiddler on the Roof submitted by SBNB on June 19, 2022, 1:39pm I watched it because it's famous, but I was mostly bored.
