Can't stop listening to James Hunter submitted by Lenny Dale on December 1, 2008, 7:38pm Picking up where he left off with 'People Gonna Talk', James Hunter has written 12 more first-rate tunes, and he and his band display development beyond even their previous high level. Hunter has added some new twists to his vocal chops, spreading the influences a listener can identify to include Jackie Wilson and Bob Marley and others. I used to describe him to friends as a cross between Ray Charles and Sam Cook, with some James Brown, Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett in there, too. Now, there is so much evident, that it becomes too much to try to categorize him. He is his own unique animal, and what an animal it is. I caught his show at The Ark the other night, and I, like the rest of the crowd, was blown away. The Hard Way shows off his guitar chops to much better advantage than People Gonna Talk - he can really rip it up, but never overdoes it - every break and solo is clear and concise. The tenor and baritone sax players are the same way - just right, not to little, not too much. I can't think of a better R&B/rock n' roll singer, living or dead, the band is tight as can be, and every song he writes is a good one.
