A wagon train of three families has hired mountain man Stephen Meek to guide them over the Cascade Mountains. Claiming to know a shortcut, Meek leads the group on an unmarked path across the high plain desert, only to become lost in the dry rock and sage. Over the coming days, the emigrants face the scourges of hunger, thirst, and their own lack of faith in each other's instincts for survival. When they encounter a Native American, they must choose between following their guide or an 'enemy.' Includes bonus features.

Such a great film! submitted by monipate on June 27, 2013, 11:09pm This movie is beautiful, and really well-acted. Michelle Williams is pretty much fantastic in everything, and doesn't disappoint in this. The costuming and cinematography is gorgeous. And Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan are great together! (the movie they made together is also good, but nowhere near as good as this one)

Slow but good submitted by brooksza on August 15, 2022, 3:30pm This may be the slowest movie I've ever seen, but that isn't a bad thing. Between the speed, the ambient sounds and the framing, I felt immersed in this journey. There's one scene of fast-paced action that felt built to.

I can't forget the wagon wheel squeaking. There's a scene where the caravan slowly crosses right to left and that was also memorable.
