Angel returns to Los Angeles after a three-month mourning period. As ever, he's continually hoping to find peace but always manages to be confronted by demonic forces trying to wreak havoc on earth. His team of demon hunters regularly battles with the evils from Hell, while Angel has the added burden of fatherhood. Against a menacing backdrop a prophecy is uncovered in the fabled Nyazian scrolls that points to an impending apocalyptic conflict. The season's primary emissary of evil is Holtz, a seemingly invincible being conjured from past history by the demon Sahjhan.
DVD, Region 1, widescreen (1.78:1) presentation; Dolby Digital 2.0 surround.
COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Good Character Development submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 10:43pm This season’s major arcs revolve around a huge development from a brief moment in Season 3, with huge ramifications for the characters and for the show itself. This may be Angel’s darkest season, as the core groups’ relationships become increasingly strained and begin to break under the weight of their decisions. Wesley, in particular, faces some serious stumbling blocks that help bring his character into sharp focus; he’s far from the bumbling watcher of Buffy’s iconic third season. Because of the focus on the season-long storylines, this season leaves some of its roots behind, focusing more on character development than the show’s theoretical premise (that being Angel helping humanity combat the various demons that stalk the Earth); though these storylines are compelling, the show sometimes starts to feel like it’s getting away from itself. Nonetheless, the final few episodes are a non-stop thrill ride of action, betrayal, and suspense, best watched in a few marathon sessions. Though I missed the earlier simplicity of the monster of the week and looming big-bad format, it’s hard to knock the show too much as it delivers on some grand emotional ambitions here.
