Promising Debut Season submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 10:41pm Though this show is a complement to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the first episode immediately establishes a darker mood that is well-suited to its titular hero’s brooding sensibilities. The debut season does well to provide Angel with a post-Buffy raison d'être, a slate of new and familiar allies, and a formidable long-term opponent; in classic Joss Whedon style, the season even has a shocking and fairly upsetting death. Some of the character development can feel a bit convenient and forced, especially from characters carried over from the previous show, but the scripts are generally strong and the emotional arcs are as satisfying as the action scenes, which are surprisingly robust for a one-hour television show. This show has a much different tone than Buffy, but it works rather well as its own fully realized concept once it gets rolling.
