Dominique O'Brien--her friends call her Mo--lives a curious double life with her husband, Bob Howard. To the average civilian, they're boring middle-aged civil servants. But within the labyrinthine secret circles of Her Majesty's Government, they're operatives working for the nation's occult security service known as the Laundry, charged with defending Britain against dark supernatural forces threatening humanity. Mo's latest assignment is to assist the police in containing an unusual outbreak: ordinary citizens suddenly imbued with extraordinary abilities of the superpowered kind. Unfortunately these people prefer playing super-pranks instead of performing super-heroics. The Mayor of London's being levitated by a dumpy man in Trafalgar Square would normally be a source of shared amusement for Mo and Bob, but they're currently separated because something's come between them--something evil. An antique violin, an Erich Zahn original, made of white human bone, was designed to produce music capable of slaughtering demons. Mo is the custodian of this unholy instrument. It invades her dreams and yearns for the blood of her colleagues--and her husband. And despite Mo's proficiency as a world-class violinist, it cannot be controlled.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Annihilation submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 15, 2019, 2:07pm "The Annihilation Score" is the sixth novel in Charles Stross' "Laundry Files" series of sci-fi/fantasy novels about a British agency tasked with handling everything supernatural. Of course, the agency itself is secret and code named "the Laundry" because it used to be housed above a laundromat. Everyone in the agency lives and works under pseudonyms and inhabit houses that are specially protected against magical attacks.
This book focuses on Dr. Dominique "Mo" O'Brien, an agency employee who specializes in killing zombies and other scary monsters. She is also the wife of Bob Howard, protagonist of the previous books in this series. "Score" in this case refers to a musical score as Mo plays a supernatural violin as a weapon, but with terrible consequences to her personally.
Read the prequels to this book if you want to understand what is happening because each novel refers to and builds upon those that came before it. I have devoured nearly the entire series because I find its characters fascinating and its plot riveting. The author also throws in the occasional joke.
