Great Story of Struggle in New York submitted by timdufresne on July 10, 2018, 2:06pm Growing up in California, I found the American musical's obsession on telling the story of New York over and over and over again exhausting. I wrote off this show at first as another navel-gazing homage to this tiny island in the Atlantic, and that was to my own detriment. Humanity, joy, struggle and love take the forefront as the residents in this neighborhood in Washington Heights try to make their way. Miranda's lyrical virtuosity and brilliant sense of humor is on display in spades, even if it doesn't reach the *ahem* heights of Hamilton. Great show, great album.

Outstanding Debut submitted by Meginator on August 6, 2018, 5:18pm Though it has since been overshadowed by the runaway success of Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda's debut is an extraordinary work of musical theater, perhaps even more surprising than its successor. Blending Miranda's trademark freestyle rap flow with traditional Broadway musical styles, with a dash of Caribbean dance music to set the scene, the music lends the show a distinct personality that fits in well with the stories in the lyrics. The soundtrack covers the show's most important plot points, and Miranda does well to balance multiple storylines so that none gets buried. The musical numbers are more easily distinguishable from one another than Hamilton's, and some of the chord progressions are strikingly familiar from the later show, giving the two productions an obvious affinity that highlights Miranda's excellent work in giving In the Heights its unique sound (especially in relation to other Broadway shows). This soundtrack feels at once distinctly like Lin-Manuel Miranda and distinctly different from his other musical ventures and matches them for quality, perhaps even exceeding them in some ways.
