Read by Mark Bramhall, David de Vries, MacLeod Andrews, Rebecca Soler.
Lost in the Black Forest, Otto meets three mysterious sisters and finds himself entwined in a prophecy, a promise, and a harmonica--and decades later three children, Friedrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania, and Ivy in California find themselves caught up in the same thread of destiny in the darkest days of the twentieth century, struggling to keep their families intact, and tied together by the music of the same harmonica.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Harmonicas are Awesome submitted by osbornk on June 19, 2018, 10:51pm I don't read (or listen) to much YA fiction. Somehow I missed both the "teen" sticker on the case and the publisher, Scholastic, until I had listened to the first few CDs of Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan. Yes, the protagonists are wise pre-teens surrounded by (mostly) well-meaning but bumbling adults. And, yes, the plot involves many conquered obstacles, important lessons, and a dash of magic. But, this was still a good listen, probably better as an audiobook than printed. The producers embedded music in a way I've never heard in an audiobook. I heartily recommend Echo, especially to middle graders with an ear for music and a heart for social justice.

Wonderful YA Audiobook submitted by k8e on June 26, 2018, 12:25pm Despite being a *bit* older than the target audience, I thoroughly enjoyed this moving story. Set during difficult eras (the beginning of the Nazi rise to power in Germany, an Depression-era orphanage, and post-Pearl Harbor California), the book is split in three main sections that follow 3 pre-teens, all with the gift of music, and possession of a somewhat magical harmonica, as they face various struggles and hardships. Each character was charming and lovable and hard to leave as you move onto the next section - but thankfully they all reappear at the end as things are wrapped up. My only complaint is that the fairy tale that acts as a bookend felt a bit disconnected. While I just listened to the audiobook - I would definitely recommend it over the printed version as the inclusion of music throughout really added to the atmosphere and all of the voice actors did a wonderful job.
