Excellent Acting Makes Up for Missed Script Opportunities submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 9:14pm I waffled on whether I should knock off a star for the film’s lack of focus, but if the ultimate point of art is to evoke feeling then this was absolutely a success for me. The script definitely suffers from a surplus of half-baked ideas and, in the process, misses out on the opportunity to be about so much more than the main couple’s relationship. Why, one wonders, would the creators center a film around a smarmy pharmaceutical representative, introduce the idea of people driving hours to Canada to acquire necessary medication at prices they can afford, and flirt with a panoply of ethical issues in the U.S. health system if they never intended to meaningfully engage with these issues? As frustrating as this is, particularly in the current political climate, the film still succeeds as a love story, carried by phenomenal performances by Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. Their intertwining emotional journeys are crafted with depth and nuance and acted to perfection, so much so that the genre’s inherent predictability hardly matters. At the end of the day, I identified with the characters’ flaws and insecurities and found them utterly convincing; and in the crucial moments, the film’s own flaws simply ceased to matter.
