One of the Best from Disney's 3D Era submitted by Meginator on August 20, 2021, 7:47pm Content Warning: Rapunzel’s relationship with Mother Gothel uses the hallmarks and manipulative language of domestic abuse.

This films makes for a nice modern update to the typical Disney princess story, giving Rapunzel direct control over her fate (even if she does get some help from the requisite loveable sidekicks and love interest along the way). The love story feels natural and unforced, and the plot has some unexpected twists and turns while still falling within the comfortable fairy tale formula. The film has a great sense of humor and an excellent soundtrack from Alan Menken which, while far from his best, includes a good “I want” song and an excellent love song that stands on its own outside of the context of the story. The actors breathe life into these characters and make the story sparkle. I hope that this film represents a new era for Disney storytelling, because, while imperfect, it gets a lot right in a tale that will appeal to viewers of all ages.
