The lute-harpsichord heard in this recording was specially built by Keith Hill from Bach's specifications for one of his "Lautenwerke" (lute-harpichords). It has two keyboards, two sets of eight-foot gut strings and one set of four-foot brass strings. This enables the player to create effects similar to a lute, lute consor, theorbo, and a treble lute-- individually and all together.
