Originally broadcast as season one of the television series in 2012.
Anne Reid, Sarah Lancashire, Derek Jacobi.
Childhood sweethearts Alan and Celia, both widowed and in their 70s, fall for each other all over again when they are reunited on the internet after nearly 60 years. Their relationship is a celebratory tale of the power of love at any age. But this is also a story about family, and with family comes baggage. Celia's respectable, head teacher daughter Caroline is juggling bringing up two boys and dealing with her husband's infidelity.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Heartwarming submitted by gardenfaerie on August 27, 2017, 7:10am Teenage sweethearts re-meet and re-fall in love in their 70s. This series is about their past misunderstandings and forming a new life together and with their respective families. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, the characters get to know each other and we learn about their lives.

Do Watch submitted by sushai on August 21, 2018, 9:04pm I got hooked on this series right away. When describing the plot to a friend recently, she said it sounds like a reverse Romeo and Juliet. She was exactly right, only the "Romeo and Juliet" of this show are in their 70s and having to deal with disapproving (but also loving) children. So many stalwart British actors here. The best of the best.

on my "Rewatchable" list submitted by saleder on July 14, 2019, 11:55am This family story is full of fun, pathos, complexity, and excellent portrayals. We watch as two former sweethearts discover each other again and eventually marry. Their adult children have their ups and downs, fights, reconciliations, all the while supporting each other. Definitely not soppy or sickly sweet - some complex issues are addressed, and you just want to find out what happens next. I especially enjoy Derek Jacoby in this, and was glad to discover Sarah Lancashire. Just an excellent cast all around. Give it a try!

a messy relationship and family submitted by yufamily on July 21, 2021, 8:45pm It's ok

Two reactions... submitted by Steve Amick on August 9, 2021, 11:44pm 1) Part of the intrigue of this show might be the constant nagging question in the viewer's mind: Is this really what this show is about...? But it does pull you along--the disbelief that this is actually the show.
2) At moments, it's hard to ignore t'actors' apparent efforts to perform t'famous dialect of t'region, to t'point where it often feels gymnastic, contrived and precious to t' viewer. In th' way, it's a little like tolerating a heavy southern drawl on t' part of t'cast of a show from th'country, to balance out an otherwise intriguing plot. (If you get t'idea...) At times, it almost seems like it's t' intention to have t' viewer stop and quiz herself: "What did they say...?" And what makes that perhaps less appealing is t' idea that it's not just a foreign thing, but that residents of t' more metro areas, like London, might find it amusing. Like they're tittering at t' poor hicks who speak so funny--that it's not just an American reaction--and that feels a bit exploitive.
But it's charming, sure.
