Beautiful movie submitted by wendylv on August 23, 2013, 6:55am This is a great movie with the expected wonderful performances by Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, but the stunning scenery of Africa is the real star of the show.

Less "Out of Africa" -- More "Into Africa" submitted by shira.pilarski on July 25, 2020, 12:30am No one will deny that Streep and Redford are gifted actors. No one will deny that Kenya is beautiful, and safari animals are majestic. It's hard to get excited, however, about a bunch of Europeans flocking to Africa and forcibly taking plots of land and expelling the native people. They give those native people jobs, but it's never made clear how they are reimbursed. Dinesen (Streep) is the best kind of white person in the movie, since she clearly cares about the native people; she wants to teach them how to read English, after all! The local tribe's Chief points out insultingly that English people know how to read, and it doesn't help them. There are compelling relationship dynamics, particularly between Dinesen and her perpetually cheating husband (who gives her syphillis), but does a story "about" Africa from the perspective of a white colonializer really NEED to be told? Also, Streep's Danish accent is inconsistent; at times it's flawless, while at other times she sounds English.
