The great melt -- The great salmon run -- The great migration -- The great tide -- The great flood -- The great feast.
Narrated by David Attenborough.
Each season, as the ever-thinning Arctic ice recedes, polar bears face a daunting challenge; Grizzly bears in British Columbia must use ingenuity and fancy footwork to collect their catch; The annual rains of the Serengeti draw in the greatest concentration of large animals on Earth; Each year, billions of sardines flood South Africa's east coast creating an action-packed feeding frenzy; Thousands of animals make the long trek toward the life saving annual flood of Botswana's Okavango Delta; The annual plankton boom of Alaska's coastal waters attracts humpback whales and sea lions, who must avoid predatory killer whales.
DVD, region 1, widescreen (enhanced); Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo., DVD9, NTSC.

This 2-disc DVD set contains the most awesome nature documentaries I have ever seen. Six separate episodes (three on each disc) feature six different wildlife spectaculars brought about by seasonal changes -- each episode with a diary epilogue showing how they filmed some of the most difficult footages.
1. The Great Melt explores the differing effects of the summer Arctic ice melt on polar bears, narwhals, beluga whales, arctic foxes, and baby gillymots jumping off cliffs.
2. The Great Salmon Run takes place in the Alaskan and British Columbian coast amidst many predators including the agile grizzly bears.
3. The Great Migration of herds of wildebeests, elands, gazelles, zebras, etc., in Tanzania's Serengeti plains is seen through the eyes of a starving non-migrating Ndutu lion pride.
4. The Great Tide follows gigantic sardine shoals along South Africa's east coast that create feeding frenzies of dolphins, plunge-diving gannets, sharks, and even the seldom seen Bryde's whale.
5. The Great Flood chronicles the enormous effects of the annual flooding of Botswana's Okavango delta -- from termites to tiny fishes to starving elephants.
6. The Great Feast shows how billions of microscopic planktons in the Alaskan coastal waters feed an amazing number of species from jellyfishes to herrings to whales.
My favorite sequence is in The Great Feast, where sea gulls attacking from the top and murres attacking from the bottom are able to corral a shoal of herrings into a gigantic bait ball, only to have an equally gigantic humpback whale come up and swallow it whole. This fantastic sequence is then followed by the famous "bubble net feeding" display by a team of humpback whales. Unfortunately, the script says that "this is the only place on the planet where whales feed in this way," which is not true. Humpback whales execute bubble net feeding in the Antarctica waters as well, which is gorgeously documented in DisneyNature Earth [DVD 590 Ea].
