Sigma Force's Great Leap Forward submitted by Coffeebuzz on July 10, 2016, 1:19pm Sigma Force operates under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and consists of Special Forces soldiers that went on to study science. This allows them to take on cases that require a scientific background and muscle. Gray Pierce is the commander of Sigma Force. The books in this series can be read individually and don't need to be read in order in my opinion. The references to prior books are there but there is enough explanation that nothing is lost in the current story. This episode has a lot of archeology and spelunking in it. The archeology focuses on the anthropology behind the Great Leap Forward/human intelligence. There are ethical considerations around using DNA but I don't want to spoil the story so I'll stop there. It was heavily researched by James Rollins, the author, and he does explain where his research ends and the fiction begins at the end of the story.

My only criticism would be that he wrote the chapters that took place in an earlier time/another place so well that I wanted them to continue for awhile longer. Rollins is really good at pulling the reader into the story. So, the part of the story that introduces Gray seems flat after the chapters that go on before it. Once he is introduced, the story picks up again. The book moves at a fast pace and I really enjoyed it.
