Mark is a desperate unempolyed writer who lives in a world where everyone unfailingly tells the truth. People don't even know what fiction is. Every thought, no matter how humiliating or harsh, tumbles out unvarnished. Then one day, Mark becomes so desperate he concocts a lie. In a world where everyone is unfailingly honest, a lie is believed with total and absolute gullibility. Mark can get anything he wants. The one thing he truly wants is the love of a girl named Anna who happens to be the one person he can't bring himself to lie to.

Funny submitted by jarroyo on June 19, 2013, 10:26pm This movie is really funny. It's about a time where people can't lie and then someone changes it and can. It's an interesting premise and a funny movie. I really enjoyed it.

Worth the watch submitted by pej08 on August 7, 2015, 4:19pm This movie has what at first seems to be a novelty/amusing premise: in an alternate world mankind was born without the ability to lie, everyone says what is on their mind and is completely honest at all times. This leads to humankind being shallow (everyone admits their interest in looks and money) and no one really seems to be that happy. The protagonist (played by Ricky Gervais) is at a truly low point when he discovers the ability to lie, and uses it to turn his life around. I was afraid this would be a predictable rom-com, but it turned out to be a creative, touching piece that offers a lot of insight to humankind and religion. Although the scenes don't always seem to flow together smoothly, the movie is well-written and definitely worth the watch.
