His mama teaches him the ways of life and leaves him to choose his destiny. Forrest joins the army and heads off to Vietnam where he becomes friends with Dan and Bubba. He wins medals, starts a table tennis craze, creates a famous shrimp fishing fleet, inspires people to jog, create the smiley, writes bumper stickers and songs, and meets the president several times. However this has little meaning to Forrest, as he can only think of his childhood sweetheart Jenny. In the end, all he wants to prove is that anyone can love anyone.

great movie! submitted by airgood on June 15, 2015, 3:47pm Fantastic performance by Tom Hanks! This is such a great movie all around- I love the soundtrack, the portrayals of friendships, and the pieces of history that are included.

Love Love Love Forrest Gump submitted by AprilCDB on July 26, 2016, 1:52pm Just love Forrest Gump. I actually got this because I wanted to see the extras. I wanted to see how they made all the magic in this movie happen because they did such a GREAT job. I mean really? How is it that Gary Sinise doesn't have legs?! And, was Forrest REALLY at all of the historic moments in history? I mean, he HAD to be right? Here are the pictures to PROOF it! So good!

First watch, greatly enjoyed submitted by gladaaro on July 29, 2021, 10:11pm Somehow I had never watched this film before. It was worth the time, a crazy review of so many events in American history.

Treat yourself to the original novel by Winston Groom instead submitted by Steve Amick on August 28, 2022, 10:02pm From the start, they twisted this dark, Moliere like novel into this sachrine box of chocolates. The line, by the way , at the opening of the book, is the complete opposite stance: "Let me say this: being a idiot ain't no box of chocolates." The devastation continues from there. Do yourself a favor: erase Tom Hanks from your mind, picture ALex Karis as Mongo in Blazing Saddles, and read the real thing. The novel is about how we get boxed in by labels, like "idiot:" the movie twisted that into saying that anyone can do anything.

Interesting to watch again submitted by brooksza on August 12, 2023, 11:15am This movie hit a little differently on this watch. There were historical and cultural references I didn't pick up in my youth, but the big change was how emotional the last 20 minutes of this movie hit. The moment when Forrest asks if his son is smart was so good. The thesis for the movie worked even if it can feel saccharin and simple. Lt. Dan is a classic character and performance.

Some of the style and repetition was grating on this visit.
