COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Appalachian Music Straight from the Front Porch submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2022, 6:30pm Coming straight from the source, this is an essential album for anyone interested in Appalachian music. The Fuzzy Mountain String Band learned these tunes directly from members of their community, and the communal approach is evident in the casual (yet technically accomplished) playing style; listening to this album feels like sitting on a porch during a jam session, which is the best way to do this type of music justice. The ensemble’s large size allows for a depth and richness to the arrangements, which themselves share obvious connections to folk music traditions from other regions of the world (particularly Irish reels), and while the tunes are short they are effective. It’s wonderful that the group was able to record these old time string band tunes and, in doing so, preserve this aspect of Appalachian culture and share it more broadly.
