Big Trouble, Big Fun submitted by Fevvers - STAR473 on August 14, 2015, 3:47am Big Trouble In Little China is a cult classic with evil magic battling good, explosions, humor, crazy action, some cool (and some grotesque) special effects, and ancient prophecies coming to fruition

What really makes it work is how it uses tropes by both playing into them as well as subverting them. Kurt Russell's character is the lead, but he isn't actually the one having the classic Hero's Journey for this story. In fact, he's mostly the meathead sidekick (though not 100% of the time, because the movie doesn't keep any character any one thing). I am also happy to note that the women leads get immediate strengths and character beats, and while there is plenty of damsel-in-distress plot, there's also enough of the ladies - including the quintessential damsel character whose kidnapping kicks off the whole thing - getting some good writing. The bit characters get their moments as well.

It's a good ride. It is over-the-top and clever about it.

No trouble with this one! submitted by brooksza on July 25, 2022, 3:54pm This was a blast and probably would have been one of my favorites as a kid in the 90s. I totally get why they can't Kurt Russell as Chris Pratt's dad in a movie 30 years later.
