COMMUNITY REVIEWS

The Leftovers - season 1 DVDs submitted by Fevvers - STAR473 on August 24, 2016, 8:28pm There's so much I've been enjoying about this show - just binge-watched the season. Atmospheric, great cast, interesting characters, weird goings-on, and amazing musical scoring in the episodes. (I'm not a fan of the opening title sequence, though.)

I don't mind that there isn't a firm, linear, singular plot. Binge-watching it versus waiting week to week probably offset some frustration.

The in-episode music scoring is top-notch.

"The Leftovers" is based around an apparently paranormal experience: 2% of the world's population suddenly and simultaneously vanishes one day. The show deals primarily with the fallout from that event, ranging from individuals' various coping/continuing on mechanisms to new and altered government practices. It's about grief and terrible lack of confidence in this subsequent reality. It's also simply a very good weird fiction drama.

The cast is great: Justin Theroux (seriously, he does great in his role of mentally fragile chief of police in a suburban town), Amy Brennerman, and especially Ann Dowd, who plays a fairly secondary but important character who doesn't speak by choice. Expressions and body-language are delivered well by all the actors.

Strongly recommended for fans of Les Revenants/The Returned, Twin Peaks, Bates Motel, and other odd, melancholy yet purposeful shows.

Very Addicting submitted by swiderskis on June 18, 2017, 11:17am I couldn't stop watching. A really great exploration of what would happen after a world altering event without venturing too far into a dystopian society. The show could have easily just attributed it to divine events but it also explores the worldly aspects too. I suspect this has to do more with the original book written by Tom Perrotta, which I have not yet read but have been inspired to do so by this show!

This is a great show! submitted by timdufresne on August 10, 2018, 4:40pm Please check out this unusual and fascinating show. The cast is great the questions and mysteries they pose are thought-provoking. Really a must-watch.

Thought-provoking submitted by ferielp on August 31, 2018, 1:16pm An excellent show with a brilliant Rapture-like concept, which is explored from religious, scientific, and science fiction angles. The acting is excellent, the moral dilemmas are compelling, and score has stayed with me months later.
