COMMUNITY REVIEWS

phantom submitted by a2sue on July 17, 2013, 4:58pm not a great adaptation

Do not miss the Documentary: Behind the mask submitted by vk on May 16, 2014, 6:28pm The gem of this Blu-Ray edition (as well as the 2-disc DVD special edition) of the 2004 Schumacher makeover of the Phantom of the Opera for the cinematic screen is not the movie itself (it's okay but nothing to crow about) but is found in the special features. There are three special features in the Blu-Ray edition (as well as the 2-disc DVD special edition):

1. Documentary: Behind the Mask - The Story of the Phantom of the Opera
2. Featurette: The Making of The Phantom of the Opera in 3 Spellbinding Acts:Preproduction, The Director, Production
3. Additional Scenes: "No-one Would Listen" Approx. 4 Mins.

For Phantom of the Opera fans, DO NOT MISS the Documentary: Behind the Mask - The Story of the Phantom of the Opera. It gives a glimpse of the development of the Phantom of the Opera stage musical (1986) from the eyes of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cameron Mackintosh, and others who were there in the mid-80s. It includes, among other videos, clips of the historic preview performances of Colm Wilkerson, Sarah Brightman, and Clive Carter at Sydmonton, using the original lyrics of Richard Stilgoe. If you are a Phantom fan, you need to check out this documentary of the stage musical.

The other two special features relate to the 2004 film production. To me, the 2004 cinematic production was marred by the miscasting of an untrained singer Gerard Butler as the Phantom.

Instead, I recommend the 25th anniversary stage production "The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall (2012)".

The Phantom Of The Opera submitted by SBNB on August 18, 2018, 8:29pm I was a fan of the music long before this movie came out. I had also read the book before. Because of those things, this movie was disappointing. I know people who were obsessed with it. But I watched it once and didn't see what all the hype was.
