Modern Instrumentals submitted by Meginator on August 8, 2018, 4:29pm William Bolcom has a way of updating a more traditional composer's sensibilities in ways that are easily accessible for more modern listeners without a thorough background in symphonic music. Here he pairs the violin and piano in three sonatas and one brief rag that balance the instruments' sounds quite nicely. He only rarely indulges the modern instinct to demonstrate virtuosity by throwing together piles of miscellaneous notes, and the "Graceful Ghost Rag" strikes an excellent balance between sounding like ragtime and fitting the violin/piano combination.
