Ahead of its time, sort of
submitted by Will O on August 30, 2020, 10:49am
This was a very far ahead of its time and also so very mired in its time movie.
Jeanne Crain, the actress playing Pinky is white, playing a white passing black woman which is very of its time as mixed race relationships were not allowed under The Hays Code.
The message of bigotry and racism was heavy handed at times but also pretty bold for when it was made. Toward the end it veered into a courtroom drama which I wasn't expecting and it ended in a very forward thinking way with Pinky telling Tom (William Lundigan) the white man who wanted to marry her that she wasn't going to move away with him and instead stays behind where she grew up and starts a school and hospital for children of color in her local community while no longer hiding her ethnicity. A slow start but like many movies of the era it packs a lot of story into a sub two hour movie and the message is still all too timely.
