For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland's majestic mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones ... about a love that transcends the boundaries of time ... and about James Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his. Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful copper-haired daughter, Brianna, as Claire's spellbinding journey of self-discovery continues in the intrigue-ridden Paris court of Charles Stuart ... in a race to thwart a doomed Highlands uprising ... and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves.

Preferred this to Outlander submitted by crwilley on June 21, 2013, 8:28am So many people had recommended Outlander to me over the years that I eventually read it, and found it to be the formulaic romance novel I'd been afraid it would be, but the time-travel plot overlaid onto the formula intrigued me enough that I figured I'd give the second novel a chance. It was worth it - freed from the constraints of the romance novel formula, Diana Gabaldon was able to give me intrigue, politics, and court / high society drama by the bushel - and the time travel plot thickens. I'm looking forward to the third book.

great time travel submitted by Jannana37 on July 5, 2014, 10:36pm Maybe it is not possible to change the past - things meant to be will happen one way or another. Can't wait for the e-mail telling me that the next book in the series is ready for me to pick up.

Yes!! submitted by emilysuzanne on July 30, 2019, 9:24am I’m obsessed with this series.

Time travel is a game changer submitted by crp on August 5, 2019, 8:45pm Time travel is a game changer

The story continues submitted by dree411 on August 31, 2019, 12:07pm Loved reading more about Claire and Jamie. Have read the book multiple times. While the tv interpretation is pretty good, the book is so much better.

meh submitted by amym on July 28, 2022, 9:00am I thoroughly enjoyed Outlander, but I think maybe it would have worked best as a stand-alone rather than part of a series. Much of this seems like variations on the theme. The court intrigue in France was long and tedious with far too many characters to keep track of. I'm not sure if I will read any more of the series after this one.

Gratuitous sexual assaults submitted by courtneyhooper on August 10, 2022, 8:43pm It’s unfortunate that this writer uses sexual assault as a plot device so freely. It’s as if every time she wants to heighten tension, she can think of no conflict but to have a depraved man intent on rape. Certainly with all these volumes, she could occasionally imagine some storylines that don’t involve a sexually imperiled woman (and occasional man).
