Costa-Gavras puts the United States' involvement in South American politics under the microscope in this arresting thriller. An urban guerilla group, outraged at the counterinsurgency and torture training clandestinely organized by the CIA in their country (unnamed in the film), abducts a U.S. official to bargain for the release of political prisoners; soon the kidnapping becomes a media sensation, leading to violence.

...traffic and communications... submitted by mr_hunchback on September 22, 2015, 12:39pm Taking its title from a Camus drama about Franco, State of Siege is set in 1972 Uruguay during Jorge Pacheco's military dictatorship.
Not really a thriller, but an investigation that follows the line connecting USAID and other NGO cut-outs directly to The School of the Americas.
Although political comment is occasionally inserted through the character of a anti-government journalist (O.E. Hasse giving the stand-out performance), visual interest is never overlooked and narrative tensions are well paced throughout. Surprisingly non-didactic and still quite fresh today this is one of Costa-Gavras' least dated films - far better than the soggy stuff he did propping-up Hollywood has-beens and probably even better than Z.
