Catherine Deneuve's screen debut at the age of 13, and for one other thing ... well two actually ... multiples of two ..., this 1957 French New Wave "film" (who would dare call this a mere "movie") follows the adventures of teenage freedom fighters at a girls' boarding school who valiantly resist their fascist headmistress' insistence that they wear pajama tops and express their burgeoning tender passions for one another and the occasional older man. The gang shower scene is particularly noteworthy for its tasteful treatment of so sensitive a subject years ahead of American Cinema. An ending both happy and tragic, a true three-hanky tear-jerker.
