Dark High School Drama submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 8:33am Veronica Mars is unusually dark for a series set in high school, and the show tackles subjects like rape (including statutory rape), physical abuse, and murder throughout the season. The central mystery is well-constructed and woven in nicely throughout the series, while Veronica has plenty of interesting mystery-of-the-week cases to solve, mostly revolving around her classmates but sometimes relating to her personal life. Information about the season-long arc comes in at a steady pace and the ultimate villain is a surprise but also believable given everything leading up to the big reveal. Veronica is a strong central character whose greatest strengths can also be her greatest flaws, making her a good focal point throughout the season, and the show has a nice sarcastic sense of humor to it. It can get pretty dark, especially toward the final episodes, but it has a solid mix of drama and humor, held together by excellent character development throughout the cast.
