Not her best but there are still some good songs submitted by klickitat on August 20, 2012, 10:19pm I appreciate the guts it took to write a soul album but Griffin, bless her, doesn't quite pull it off. The problem isn't the quality of the songs (although the Civil Rights ones are a little hokey) but rather the fact that her voice just doesn't suit them.

However, "No Bad News," now that song is worth the price of admission! I never get tired of it. "Getting Ready" is also an excellent rocker and plays more to Griffin's strengths.

As Good As Ever submitted by Meginator on July 7, 2017, 8:59am Patty Griffin is an immensely talented songwriter, and while I agree that some of these songs don't suit her strengths as well as they could, I think they're better than what most artists can pull off. I appreciate the expanded instrumentation in some of the songs, but Griffin is at her best when the focus is on the acoustic guitar and her vocals. I think this album is another success even if it isn't her strongest.
