Let down, Hanging Around submitted by Caser on September 24, 2011, 8:54am It's hard to believe after all the talk about these indie power poppers that they only have three proper albums. The first established their sound, a literate, heart on the sleeve, guitar band for the liberal arts college set. Kind of a Vampire Weekend model minus the Peter Gabriel influence.

The second was a step forward in their songwriting, paring away the excess and giving each part of the song a more definite purpose. Naturally, the third record, Wincing the Night Away, would be their experimental turn, with longer songs and more variety in tone and structure.

I'm all for an established band pushing themselves into new directions, but with a purpose. Although there are good moments, here, namely Australia and Phantom Limb, much of the music feels aimless and boring. Or maybe tired, rather than inspired. And based on Mercer's work with Danger Mouse in Broken Bells, it seems he was getting restless too.

The Shins will change your life submitted by doctorfang on August 2, 2015, 12:26am Zach Braff said that The Shins would change my life, so I gave this album a listen. He was right. This is perhaps the best album offered by The Shins to date.
