Good Originals & Less-Played Classics submitted by Meginator on July 31, 2023, 1:44pm While this collection of Christmas-themed EPs is consistently burdened by Sufjan Stevens’s typical self-congratulatory, hyper self-aware style of DIY indie pop, its down-home charm works really well for the holiday season and the ratio of hits to misses is high enough that the entire collection is worth a listen to find its gems. Besides the style, what really sets these albums apart is the song selection; while Stevens does offer his interpretations of a few stalwarts, he digs deep to find lesser-known carols and hymns and his original compositions are often good enough to be potential classics in their own right. The occasionally odd instrumentation and rocky production value may understandably alienate some listeners, but I was really surprised by how well it works in this specific context; even when the recordings get too wrapped up in a bid for originality over, you know, quality (my most frequent complaint about Stevens), you can tell that there’s a deep undercurrent of appreciation and emotion in the performances. This is a time capsule of sorts to indie’s mid-00s heyday, but Sufjan Stevens has always sounded unique even among his peers, and his approach to the holiday season feels surprisingly fresh amid an endless onslaught of mindless musical clones.
