Oil on canvas. Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was a painter who grew up in France and Peru. He showed his work in impressionist exhibitions early in his career. Critics consider him a post-impressionist for his highly personal application of impressionism. In fact, he referred to himself as a synthesist. The term refers to the fact that his techniques matched the emotions of his paintings. While impressionists usually attempted to recreate a scene, Gauguin{u2019}s purpose was to induce emotions. Later in his career, Gauguin moved to Tahiti and lived throughout French Polynesia. During this time he created works that would later inspire the primitivist movement. He simplified his compositions, applied paint more heavily, and flattened perspective. These works became popular only after his death, influencing such prominent artists as Pablo Picasso.
