Based on the book "Alan Turing : the enigma" by Andrew Hodges.
Special features: Feature commentary with director Morten Tyldum and screenwriter Graham Moore; The making of The Imitation Game; Deleted scenes.
Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Mark Strong, Rory Kinnear, Matthew Goode, Charles Dance, Allen Leech.
During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of "gross indecency," an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality - little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany's World War II Enigma machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, "The Imitation Game" a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save thousands of lives.
DVD, region 1, anamorphic widescreen (2.39:1) presentation; Dolby Digital 5.1.
Contents: Alan Turing.

The little-known story submitted by GJBarnett2 on June 28, 2015, 4:34pm ... of one of the great minds of the 20th century, a man who made inestimable contributions to the allied victory in WWII, the man who more than any other invented the computer and broke the German Enigma code shortening the war, historians estimate, by 2 years and saving as many as 14 million lives. A story with a genuinely tragic ending. A great cast, one of the best films of the year.

Amazing! submitted by mmckenzie on July 9, 2015, 3:36pm Well worth your time! Very hard to watch in some sections, but completely worth it. I had no idea of this true story, and particularly the back story. I don't usually watch 'war' movies, but this one approached the genre from a different perspective.
Btw, I don't think the other reviewer, gjbarnett2, ('little known story') should have given any clues about the end of the movie.

great movie submitted by LVDS on July 17, 2015, 7:53am Well done, interesting history!!

Amazing submitted by chioma on June 17, 2016, 11:08am This movie was absolutely stunning. You feel like you're in it yourself, beside Alan Turing helping him find a way to break Enigma, the Nazi's "unbreakable code machine" In this movie you go through his up's and his downs, and eventually triumph over Enigma. This is really a must watch movie, and the thing is, is that it's all true. 5 out of 5 stars for the imitation game!

Good history submitted by wgregory on July 3, 2016, 10:34am I was very pleased they did not leave out the ending.

Great Biopic submitted by Meginator on July 9, 2017, 4:29pm I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this film; for a biopic especially, it had a lot of tension. The script is tight and conveys real tension, even though audiences generally know how the story turns out. I appreciated that the filmmakers didn't gloss over the tragic end to Turing's life, even if it felt a bit awkward in the way that it was appended to the main plot. The other technical aspects of this film are excellently executed as well: the acting is amazing, the costumes and sets are believable, and the whole film is exceptionally well constructed. I left wanting to know more about the true stories behind the Enigma codebreakers, and Alan Turing himself, and I think that's a sign of a well made historical film.

Beautiful movie but historically inaccurate submitted by Marykw21 on August 10, 2017, 6:37pm First I would like to say that, I loved this movie! Benedict was phenomenal per usual and the cinematography was beautiful. But I was sad to hear that it wasn't as historically accurate as they portray it to be, though I understand that sometimes things need to be changed to make a good artistic movie. This movie, though it was made to give you a feel of Alan's life, was very loosely based on true events. I would suggest that if you want to watch a well made, beautiful film to watch this one, but if you would like to learn more about the history of Alan Turing and his impact on World War 2 I would suggest you look to reading his biography, "Alan Turing: The Enigma".

Wow submitted by KOH on August 27, 2017, 11:20pm Incredible movie. Benedict Cumberbatch gives a heartbreaking performance.

amazing submitted by kbahleda on July 23, 2018, 9:59am Such a good story and Benedict Cumberbatch was a great actor for this part.

not entirely accurate, historically submitted by lisa on August 14, 2018, 2:23pm but pretty good

Great submitted by c_zhang on June 29, 2019, 1:08am Not very historically accurate, but Cumberbatch gives a great performance.

The Imitation Game submitted by lstorc on July 7, 2019, 11:17pm This is a sensationalized version of reality. That said, it was very well done and heartbreaking.

great submitted by kevinhe on July 26, 2019, 3:00pm very nice movie.

The Imitation Game submitted by Varshini on August 1, 2019, 9:18pm This is one of my favorite movies. I was hooked from the second I started watching. The Imitation Game is a movie you don't want to miss! 5/5 stars.

Imitation game submitted by crp on August 28, 2019, 8:34pm The story behind Turing’s team and their groundbreaking discovery in WW2. Amazing historical details- and portrayal.

ad submitted by GioMuzique on August 5, 2020, 5:57pm absolutely stunning

Really Gets You Inside the Mind of This Man in a Very Effective Way submitted by sVfGI7Glt2pz7GZgVB90 on August 15, 2020, 10:57pm The Imitation Game is about the World War II race to crack the ENIGMA code that the Nazis used to communicate across the globe. It's not really a war movie. A lot of this takes place in a makeshift lab where Alan Turing builds a computer out of spare bits of pipe and wiring. Turing was a genius, but he was also tortured because he was a homosexual. There are many flashbacks about his troubled youth at boarding school.

BTW, nobody oozes intelligence and suave as Benedict Cumberbatch seems to do now.

Spot on. submitted by graytabby on August 2, 2021, 11:52am This is an amazing interpretation of Alan Turing!

Enjoyed it! submitted by KatieD on August 18, 2021, 1:33pm A very good dramatization of a historical figure I didn't know much about

hollywood submitted by tisaallen on June 15, 2022, 6:28pm Sucks how this movie inaccurately depicted war hero Alan Turing as a traitor for a minor plot point.

Incredible Moving submitted by MikkiMoscara on June 13, 2023, 3:59pm This moving about Alan Turing is very inspiring. It beautifully covers parts of Turing's life and his work during the war. There could have been so much more covered, but the movie does a wonderful job.
