interesting account submitted by 21621031390949 on June 20, 2014, 10:24pm I picked up this book because I'd read about it in the New York Times Book Review. I enjoy learning a bit about history through memoirs or accounts such as this. Recently, I've read several books about the Great Depression and WWII eras, and this added to my fund of knowledge. Also gave me a lot of information about rowing, and a greater appreciation of the sport.

Explains a lot about the sport submitted by debacker on July 20, 2014, 3:09pm Though I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the lives of these young men and those around them, as well as about the history of world events that unfolded during that time, as a crew parent what I found to be extremely enlightening was the narrative about what it really takes to row a boat. This book unlocks that information and explains it in a way that is both engaging and informative. The section about the importance of the coxain is also very well discussed. Although I knew they were an important part of the boat, I don't think I fully realized how important until reading this book.

The narrater does fine in his reading, adding inflection and excitement to his voice to convey emotion of the events as they are being discussed.

Great on Audio as well! submitted by mickplu on July 20, 2018, 8:06pm The audio version of course lacks the photos, but Wow! The amount of research and detail that went into this book is amazing. One of the most interesting accounts/aspects of the Great Depression and WWII, told in an underdog wins the gold style. The quotes from the boy's and coach's journals added to the account. Joe Rantz, the main character, being one of the few "boys" that was alive during the research gathering, is unforgettable for his hardship and what he ultimately accomplishes.
