Richard Burton is Genius submitted by Caser on December 9, 2009, 2:53pm In what might be the best Cold War film not titled The Third Man, Richard Burton is simply brilliant in this 1965 tense spy film where he stars as a British secret agent, Leamas, who dons the guise of a defecting spy in order to obtain coveted intelligence that may literally leave him out in the cold.

As expected from a narrative based on a Le Carre novel, the plot is tortuous, shifting, yet always credible, emphasized by Oswald Morris' stark, gritty photography. Warning: this is not a cheeky Bond film rife with absurd action sequences. The dialogue is pointed and lengthy, the shots meticulously arranged, and the timbre a taut string of dynamite, slowly smoldering until the dramatic conclusion.
