Thumbs up! submitted by pkooger on November 28, 2008, 11:25am Director Guillermo del Toro hits the mark again in this sequel to Hellboy. Hellboy II: The Golden Army has all of the elements that made the first film successful. Interesting characters with superpowers AND personalities keep the film fresh, and the CGI battles and stunts will satisfy anyone looking for fantasy action. Del Toro always has fantastic locations and backgrounds in his films, and this one is no exception. My only complaint is that the film jumps around in location so much that we only get to see each place for a few minutes. I would have loved to spend more time exploring places like the goblin market or the ruins of the underground city in which the titular golden army is entombed.
In the superhero/fantasy genre it is a rare thing to have a sympathetic villain as well as a sympathetic hero, but Hellboy II has both. Prince Nuada is definitely a bad guy (he wants to kill all humans), but in a sense his actions are motivated by trying to save himself and the rest of the non-human world. The heros are equally conflicted. For example, is it ethical to save the life of someone who is destined to destroy the world? Del Toro likes to explore the grey areas, and that is why I like his movies.

Golden submitted by Fevvers - STAR473 on August 6, 2014, 5:14pm I found this one not as flat-out enjoyable as the first Hellboy, but the visuals are amazing. The story is a bit too murky, but there's no arguing that the film is gorgeous. The goblin market setting is worth quite a lot of close inspection - I did a lot of pausing and delved into some "making-of" clips. I recommend it - but for both better and for worse, it has a different feel than the first Hellboy.
